A GLOBAL COMMUNITY

The concept of community is an important one for the Public Knowledge Project, as it speaks to what connects us in a common cause and a deeply held commitment. This commitment is to people’s right to knowledge, within which public access to research and scholarship is vital. The widespread use of PKP’s publishing platforms has given rise to a diverse, global community along these lines, which, as one of the project’s studies has established, is using open infrastructure to publish research and post preprints across 146 countries, in 60 languages, and in the full range of academic disciplines.

Within this community are a good number of institutions and organizations that contribute directly to support PKP’s work, whether through journal development initiatives, direct financial support, or strategic alliances. We refer to these parties as members of the PKP Community.

MEMBERSHIP MODEL

PKP’s contribution to this broader community is supported by a robust, worldwide membership model. PKP relies on this community of contributors to strengthen and sustain its ongoing maintenance and development of its publishing platforms. Building on SFU’s administrative support and the revenue generated by PKP Publishing Services, we depend on contributions from Members to sustain and direct software development, educational initiatives, and research programs. These memberships take the form of Development Partners, Financial Contributors, and In-Kind Contributors. Members have the opportunity to apply for member benefits, including designated seats on PKP governing bodies.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

PKP initiates and maintains strategic partnerships with organizations and other agencies similarly committed to serving the field of scholarly communication. These partnerships involve collaborating on research projects; developing innovative software solutions; offering joint workshops, seminars, or conference presentations; and contributing to advocacy and capacity building initiatives, all concerned with advancing open access scholarly publishing.
