Announcing forthcoming PKP LOCKSS PLN

June 3rd, 2014 by  | 5 Comments

PKP is developing a Private LOCKSS Network (PLN) to digitally preserve OJS journals. The LOCKSS program offers decentralized and distributed preservation, seamless perpetual access, and preservation of the authentic original version of the content. The PKP PLN will ensure that journals that are not part of the Global LOCKSS Network, which primarily preserves content from larger publishers and vendors, or an existing PLN, which preserve small numbers of OJS journals hosted by member libraries, can be preserved using the LOCKSS program.

OJS journal managers will register their journal for inclusion in the PLN by enabling a plugin and agreeing to a small number of terms. The PLN will automatically harvest new content from registered journals, and will provide access to preserved content in the event that the journal ceases publication. The PKP PLN will be ready for testing by partner sites with the release of OJS 2.4.5 (Summer 2014). Several member sites have agreed to act as LOCKSS nodes, including University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, Indiana University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Victoria, and Simon Fraser University.

Please let us know what you think! For more detail on the PKP PLN, and to share your thoughts/questions using the commenting feature; see the high level overview.

This is excellent and welcome news!

  2. Melody says:

This is terrific; I spent half of a day yesterday trying to figure out a low cost way to be in a LOCKSS as a very small library publishing two journals (three soon, my first external to our institution).

  3. It is certainly the best news I could get.
Now there is really a path to a full OJS policy
Thank you to all the team of the PKP
