New PKP School Course – Introduction to Getting Started in Library Publishing
We’re excited to introduce the latest addition to PKP School’s offerings: the Introduction to Getting Started in Library Publishing. This new course provides an essential foundation to our series Getting Started in Library Publishing, adapted from the Library Publishing Curriculum produced by the Educopia Institute and the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC).
What is PKP School?
PKP School is our collection of online, self-paced courses designed to enhance scholarly publishing practices globally. Launched in 2013, PKP School now features 17 courses available in both English and Spanish. These courses cover a range of topics, from setting up a journal and mastering editorial workflows in OJS to learning publishing workflows for various roles.
About Getting Started in Library Publishing
The Getting Started in Library Publishing PKP School course series was adapted from the Library Publishing Curriculum developed by the Educopia Institute and the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC), in partnership with the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), NASIG, and BlueSky to BluePrint. The content was adapted under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) 4.0 license.
The original curriculum, launched in 2018 and authored by experts in the field, includes four comprehensive modules focusing on major competencies in library publishing: Content, Impact, Policy, and Sustainability. In 2020, we adapted this curriculum for PKP School to make it even more accessible.
Whether you are a student in a Library or Information Studies program, a library worker interested in starting a publishing program, or a staff member of an established library publishing unit, the Getting Started in Library Publishing course series provides detailed guidance on how academic libraries can succeed in providing publishing services to their campus communities.
What’s New?
In 2021 the Library Publishing Coalition formed an editorial board that would steer future iterations of the curriculum. In response to the need for a more beginner-friendly approach, the Editorial Board chose to develop an introduction which frames the rest of the curriculum for those new to library publishing. The introduction provides a clear, entry-level overview of the basics, covering the essentials of who, what, when, where, and why in library publishing.
It’s designed to give newcomers a solid foundation before diving into the more detailed aspects of the field. The Introduction Module was added to the Library Publishing Curriculum in 2024 and was adapted for PKP School in August of this year.
We’re delighted to partner with the LPC to offer this self-paced version of the curriculum introduction and help more librarians and publishing professionals get started in this vital area.
