The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is seeking a full-time contractor to provide oversight for a variety of current and emerging projects as a Project Manager.

Project Manager

Position Type: Full-time contractor (35 hours/week)

Rate: $45-55 CAD/hour

Duration: 2 years with possibility of extension


We’re seeking a highly organized, tech-savvy, and creative individual with strong communication and relationship-building skills – and a passion for PKP’s open source software and open access publishing!

This is a unique opportunity to work for a university-based, non-commercial project with strong values and a worthy mission to further global open access to scholarly research. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with members of the leadership team to establish detailed project charters, plans, and objectives to outline timelines and project deliverables.
  • Executes project plan according to project methodologies, ensures successful and coordinated completion of project components, facilitates consensus with stakeholders as needed, and ensures readiness for project implementation.
  • Tracks project progress according to project plan, monitors and reports on the status of projects and major issues/obstacles encountered. Makes recommendations regarding project scope changes.
  • Acts as a resource to project team and staff, provides support, and ensures that projects adhere to established timelines and budgets.
  • Contributes to the implementation of effective processes to ensure project success and to assess project risks, identify risk mitigation strategies, and monitor risk throughout the life cycle of the project.
  • Meets with stakeholders, explains the parameters of the project, and seeks input from cross-functional team leaders. Works collaboratively with team members to establish roles and responsibilities, and identify required skills and supports needed by the team.
  • Works in collaboration with leadership and stakeholders to develop a process of evaluation for project outcomes, data collection, and analysis.
  • Ensures accurate and timely communications with stakeholders, including monitoring the communication processes between the project team, and internal and external stakeholders and introducing changes where required. Provides regular status reports to project leadership including reporting on milestones.
  • Develops briefing papers, reports and presentations, researching elements as required, to support timely decision-making and implementation.
  • Participates on a variety of committees and establishes positive working relationships in order to ensure successful outcomes and cooperation from others on the project.
  • Plans and executes handover to operational teams at the conclusion of the project.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field or equivalent experience. A Masters Degree in a related field (Publishing, Library and Information Studies, Business, Communications) is an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project management concepts, tools, and methodologies.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Well-organized individual with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Effective facilitation, persuasion, and negotiation skills to achieve consensus, resolve differences, and achieve desired outcomes.
  • The ability to think independently and apply good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven self-starter; able to produce results while working independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to interact effectively and listen deeply.
  • Ability to interact productively and professionally with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to various cultural perspectives and work in culturally relevant ways with the global PKP community and the internal PKP team.  
  • Understanding of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the importance of incorporating these values in our work at PKP. 

Desired

  • Certification in project management is an asset.
  • Experience working on open source development projects. Knowledge of Open Journal Systems (OJS), Open Monograph Press (OMP), and/or Open Preprint Systems (OPS) is an asset.
  • Experience working within a Quality Assurance environment.
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in other languages is an asset.
  • Experience working in diverse, remote teams.

Working Arrangements

The successful candidate can work remotely from anywhere in the world. We are seeking a project manager for a two-year agreement (with the possibility of extension). Working hours are flexible (although you will need to participate in online meetings in American time zones). Professional development is available to ensure success in the role.

Contract fee

The contract fee is $45 to $55 CAD per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
