PKP held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the 2023 fiscal year on May 29th, 2024. The AGM recording is now available.

On May 29th, 2024, the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), including updates on the Fiscal Year 2023 and staff presentations.

The meeting started with Marco Tullney, chair of PKP’s Advisory Committee welcoming the community and giving the floor to Marisa Tutt, PKP Publishing Services Associate Director, to talk about PKP’s Land Acknowledgement.

In her message, Marisa spoke about the importance of the land acknowledgments practiced in Canada as an act of respect and awareness of the territory’s history and the Indigenous communities that inhabit it.

“If we think of territorial acknowledgments as sites of potential disruption, they can be transformative acts that to some extent undo Indigenous erasure. I believe this is true as long as these acknowledgments discomfit both those speaking and hearing the words. The fact of Indigenous presence should force non-Indigenous peoples to confront their own place on these lands.”

Marco walked the community through the Advisory Committee Report highlighting the activities and most important discussions of the group during 2023, including but not limited to the following:

  • Equity and inclusion work
  • PKP Publishing Services
  • Diamond Open Access

His message also emphasized PKP’s good standing as an open infrastructure thanks to community contributions to keep the project sustainable.

Financial Report

Graphic illustrating a financial report with two sections: Revenue and Expenses. On the left, there is a bar chart representing Revenue. On the right side of the image is a pie chart detailing Expenses. Adjacent to the pie chart are numerical figures for total revenue and expenses breakdown in Canadian dollars. The text below states that the fiscal year is April 1st to March 31st of an unspecified year and all budget amounts are in Canadian dollars.

The Financial Report, by Kevin Stranack, PKP’s Operations Director, showed us the Financial health of PKP. Kevin explained the diversified system of income by which the project is sustained, including PKP Publishing Services, research grants, the membership program, Simon Fraser University resources, and event sponsorship.

Additionally, this report showed the distribution of the project’s expenses, reflecting that the largest percentage of these cover personnel costs. Other important items include infrastructure, outreach, and administration. The report showed the surplus from this year’s activities and the total reserve funds.

Some of the design work to look for in the short future are:

  • Editor workload
  • Multilingual Considerations
  • JATS XML

PKP Won’t be Bought or Sold

Graphic featuring a large, jagged mountain peak covered with snow on the left side, and a red to white gradient background on the right side with text overlay. The top section says ‘THERE YOU HAVE IT – PKP WILL NOT BE SOLD!’ in black font, and the bottom section states ‘ITS FOSS WILL REMAIN FREE & OPEN, FOREVER.’ The contrast between the rugged mountain and the bold statement about permanence makes this image interesting or relevant as it may symbolize strength and enduring commitment. (AMG 2024)

The PKP Communications team, Alejandra Casas and Famira Racy reminded the community that PKP is by design, a free, open, and community-driven project. It is thanks to the principles, governance structure, sustainability strategies, and community contributions that PKP will never be for sale.

Thank you and recording
