An image with a vibrant sunset sky, with clouds illuminated in shades of orange and yellow. In the foreground, there's a large grassy field with a person standing and looking towards the horizon. Overlaying the image is a red banner with white text that reads, "PKP becomes a supporter of the Barcelona Declaration." In the bottom left corner is the PKP (Public Knowledge Project) logo.

PKP is pleased to announce its support of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, which promotes open, collaborative research, and equitable knowledge sharing.

In April 2024, experts in research information came together to create the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information aiming to support the accessibility of open research information, metadata related to research, and its outputs.

Aligned with the FAIR guidelines, openness, collaboration, sustaining infrastructure, and collective action to go from closed to open research information are this initiative’s main principles that also promote the discoverability and usability of research data.

Signatories of this declaration commit to:

  • Making openness the default for the research information.
  • Working with services and systems that support and enable open research information.
  • Supporting the sustainability of infrastructures for open research information.
  • Supporting collective action to accelerate the transition to openness.

The Public Knowledge Project has supported inclusivity in Open Information for 25 years, developing Free Open Source Software (FOSS) tools, one of which is currently used for publishing more than 44,000 journals worldwide and in more than 40 languages. With the same principles of openness, inclusion, innovation, collaboration, and the worldwide right to knowledge at the core of our work today, PKP has become a Barcelona Declaration Supporter, joining 28 other organizations that provide data, services, and infrastructure for Open Research Information.

PKP joins this initiative hoping its support will encourage the adoption of Open Research practices and the growth of the community of academic journals and organizations that promote a more equitable dissemination of knowledge.

You can learn more about the Barcelona Declaration on their website (available in seven languages).
