As we finish the first quarter of 2024, we at PKP are happy to reflect on the events in which we have participated and organized.
Thanks to the feedback we receive from your community and with the collaboration of other organizations, PKP can get closer to users and what they need by organizing virtual or in-person events that gather users together to learn more about the project, the new developments, the software and best practices in scholarly publishing.
Software News
PKP started 2024’s events with a Software Development Update webinar, where the Development team leads shared news about the 3.3 and 3.4 versions of the software, the major features included in the next version (3.5), which will be released later this year; the migration from an in-house documentation tool to Storybook, and changes for the submissions lists and Counter 5 reports. The webinar recording and all the links mentioned in the presentation are available here.
If you want to keep up with PKP software news, make sure to register for the next Development Update Webinar on June 17th.
Student Journal Forum
This year, the Student Journal Forum welcomed 11 student groups to share their experiences managing Student Journals in Canadian Universities. During the three days of the event, the students also had the opportunity to learn from Katie Cuyler, Open Publishing and Government Information Librarian at the University of Alberta Library, and PKP’s Mariya Maistrovskaya about creating student journals and using OJS.
The forum was also the perfect opportunity for Coalition Publica to announce its Student Journal Grants, for undergraduate or graduate student-run journals.

PKP Webinar: Persistent Identifiers & Their Value
On February 27th, PKP hosted a webinar presented by Mike Nason, Open Scholarship & Publishing Librarian at the University of New Brunswick Libraries and the Crossref & Metadata Liaison at PKP. This time Mike shared his knowledge about working with persistent identifiers such as DOI and ORCID; metadata, and their importance in scholarly communications.
In case you missed it, or want to listen to Mike’s dynamic and fun presentation again, the recording for this webinar is available on our YouTube channel.
Coalition Publica event
As a partner in Coalition Publica, we welcomed the community to the online Coalition Publica Panel, “All together now: Toward partnerships for Open Access” on April 23rd, where stakeholders shared their insights on supporting OA publishing and their plans for funding Diamond OA collectively.
ORCID event series “Enabling Value”
As an ORCID Certified Service Provider, PKP participated in ORCID’s event series “Enabling Value” on March 26th.
In this presentation, Erik Hanson from the PKP team and Shivendra Naidoo, Senior Engagement Lead in the Global Direct Members team at ORCID, shared about Open Journal Systems (OJS) and Open Preprint Systems (OPS) open infrastructure for independent scholarly publishing. You will be able to find the recording on ORCID’s website.
Upcoming events
These months were just the start of PKP events for the year, and we are pleased to share that registration is open for the PKP Sprint & Library Publishing Forum Pre-Conference Event 2024. This time the PKP Sprint will be followed by a Pre-Conference day with two panels on Multilingualism and PKP’s role in the Open Ecosystem. Make sure to register as soon as possible!
Coalition Publica is also pleased to announce the Canadian Symposium of Scholarly Journals on June 19th, at McGill University (Montreal) as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Details and registration for this open event are now available on the Congress website.
We invite you to save the date for the 7th Bibliometric Research Impact Conference on June 5 and 6 with a Preconference day on the 4th at the Harbour Centre of Simon Fraser University. We hope to see you join these and other future events that PKP prepares for and with its community.
Join Israel Cefrin and Mariya Maistrovskaya on June 26 for a workshop where PKP will highlight existing and planned accessibility improvements in Open Journal Systems (OJS).
