Dulip Withanage, a PKP Software Developer, shares the story of PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) and Open Preprint Systems (OPS) becoming ORCID-certified. Further, Erik Hanson joined ORCID for an “Enabling Value” webinar, the recording of which is now available.
Dulip, when and how was OJS ORCID-certified?
OJS has been a certified ORCID service provider since OJS 3.2. Before 2023, ORCID certification as a service provider included providing functional enhancements in accordance with guidelines established by ORCID and a live demonstration in front of ORCID certification staff.
Especially after the release of the Member API functionality for the OJS plugin through a grant from the German Research Foundation, the maintenance of the ORCID functionality in OJS has received momentum and constant attention by the community. Later, PKP took care of the plugin and committed to maintain it while it went through the certification process every year.
How did the process enhance PKP’s relationship with ORCID and vice versa?
Interaction with ORCID intensified at many administrative and operation levels, and trust within the various regional branches of the ORCID organization was strengthened. Special mention should be made of the European and Canadian staff of ORCiD.org, who work with PKP at a bilateral level. In 2023, ORCID added a new certification process and PKP was contacted to be certified as one of their key customers.
Can you tell us more about the new process?
The new service clause was to outline the technical details of implementation in accordance with the ORCID guidelines. The developers of the PKP ORCID Profile plugin provided the required information, which was verified by ORCID staff. Certification was completed after the review. Due to the similarity in functionality, the OJS sister project OPS was also certified by ORCID staff after the required metadata discrepancies were verified.
Thank you Dulip, for this story and for your insights into the relationship building and efficiency of the certification process!
Here’s what ORCID has to say about their “Enabling Value” series featuring ORCID-certified service providers, and PKP:
ORCID’s Enabling Value series showcases how ORCID-certified scholarly service providers enable fast and simple registry interoperability for ORCID member organizations and other scholarly institutions.
