As part of PKP’s 25th Anniversary, and on the occasion of the Annual Day of the Central Library, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, PKP UX / UI Designer Devika Goel will offer “Demystifying Scholarly Publishing with Open Journal Systems (OJS): A Practical Workshop.”

PKP is a Core Facility of Simon Fraser University and is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2023.

Event Description

This event aims to assist both novice and experienced users of PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS), as well as individuals interested in free and open-source publishing workflows and software, in getting started with OJS. During the two-day workshop, participants will gain practical skills and knowledge on various aspects of OJS. 

PKP’s Devika Goel will guide participants through the process of setting up and customizing OJS installations, offering insights on managing submissions, editorial workflows, and publishing articles and issues online.

Audience

This workshop caters to journal editors, publishers, researchers and senior librarians who are interested in launching their own publications or are already running publishing activities. It provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with OJS while connecting with fellow members of the North Indian Open Access Scholarly Publishing Community.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Gain a comprehensive understanding of Open Journal Systems (OJS) through an in-depth overview, including its features and benefits for scholarly journal management.
  2. Acquire the knowledge and skills required to set up and effectively utilize PKP’s Open Journal Systems for journal operations, including installation, configuration, and basic settings.
  3. Learn how to customize the visual aesthetics of your journal, allowing you to create a unique and appealing online presence.
  4. Develop efficient techniques for managing submissions and conducting peer reviews within OJS, streamlining the editorial workflow and ensuring a smooth and timely process.
  5. Understand the importance of open access policies and learn how to implement and enforce them effectively within OJS, promoting the accessibility and visibility of your journal’s content.

Proposed Schedule

Day One – 9 AM arrival – 9:30 AM start

Session I (2 hours):

  • Introduction and Overview of Open Journal Systems (OJS)
  • Understanding the benefits of OJS for scholarly journal management and publishing
  • Exploring key features and functionalities of OJS

LUNCH BREAK

Session II (3 hours):

  • Navigating the interface
  • Managing submission and editorial workflows in OJS
  • Setting up a peer review process
  • Creating submission guidelines and author instructions
  • Walkthrough the settings and configurations in OJS including users and roles
  • Tools to amplify effective work
  • Upcoming features
  • Resources and training materials
  • Open the floor for questioning

Day Two – 9 AM arrival – 9:30 AM start

Session I (2 hours):

  • Setting up and customizing your own OJS installation
  • Step-by-step guidance on the installation process
  • Configuring basic settings and preferences
  • Customizing the look and feel of your journal

15 MINUTE BREAK

Session II (1 hour):

  • Implementing and enforcing open access policies
  • Understanding the importance of open access
  • Configuring and managing access settings
  • Promoting your journal and increasing its visibility
  • Best practices for ensuring a smooth editorial process and maintaining high-quality content

The workshop will include interactive exercises and hands-on activities to reinforce learning. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, troubleshoot with colleagues, and share insights with the facilitator and fellow participants. Networking and connecting with other members of the North Indian open access scholarly publishing community will be encouraged.

About Devika Goel

Devika Goel, UX / UI Designer, PKP

Devika has been working in digital transformation, product design and strategy for about five years while joining PKP in 2022 as a UX/UI designer. Her expertise lies in seeing projects through the entire design cycle right from business strategy conceptualization via stakeholder and user research, persona creation, service blueprinting, wire framing of multiple journeys mapped to personas, user interface design and effective usability testing. She holds a Master of Digital Management from Teesside University, Manchester. 

What attracted Devika towards PKP was its commitment to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working environment and scholarly communications ecosystem. Throughout her life, she attempted to navigate the world by putting communities, planet, inclusiveness, transparency and authenticity at the heart of every business design and strategy. She believes working with PKP will give her an opportunity to agitate the current social, political and economic order by experimenting with new design models that honour these values, humanity, and sustainability.
