March 6th to 10th is Open Education Week! PKP is a Core Facility at Simon Fraser University (SFU), opening up access to knowledge. At the intersection of this work is scholarly publishing, open access, and open education. PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) plays a role at this intersection, as course journals are a type of open pedagogy involving students in the creation of open knowledge.

This blog post highlights what’s on for Open Education Week and how OJS is involved in disseminating course work at SFU.

How does PKP’s free and open source software (FOSS) facilitate open education through course journals? SFU Library Digital Publishing supports instructors and students in creating open access publications that feature student work and involve students in the publishing process.

For example, the SFU Library’s Radical Access Blog is focused on scholarly publishing, open access, and education at SFU. In a recently published post entitled “Removing barriers: Three scholars talk about open education at SFU”, Professor Linda Morra (Bishop’s University, Former Jack and Nancy Farley Visiting Scholar at SFU) discussed The Women Writers’ Archive (pictured below), an example of a course journal using OJS for which she is the editor.

Students were involved as authors and reviewers using OJS, and published their final reviewed, edited course assignments in the journal. The articles are open access, and are published under Creative Commons (CC 4.0). As such, anyone accessing the educational materials may share (i.e., copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format) and / or adapt (i.e., remix, transform, and build upon the material) as long as they are following the terms.

Another avenue for open pedagogy is PKP’s Open Monograph Press, which SFU Digital Library also uses for press projects or books. Learn more about these in-class publishing projects with SFU Library’s Digital Publishing Resources.
