PKP Sprint 2016: Article-Level Metrics

The Article Level Metrics group at the 2016 PKP Sprint in Montreal aimed to provide a visualisation of the OMP usage statistics for the readers. We were a group of mostly remote participants, PKP team members and people from other institutions, working together using GitHub, Google Docs, Google Hangout and Skype.

  • Bruno Beghelli, PKP
  • Bozana Bokan, PKP
  • Svantje Lilienthal, Center for Digital Systems, Free University Berlin
  • James MacGregor, PKP
  • William Alejandro Ortiz, Biteca Ltda.
  • Andrés Ovalle, Biteca Ltda.
  • Arley Soto, Biteca Ltda.

We extended the usage stats plugin with the possibility to display the usage statistics as a chart, using the JavaScript library Chart.js. The statistics are shown at the bottom of the book page, and are displayed per month for a year. The reader can chose the year, and if he/she would like to see the summarized usage statistics for the whole book or differentiated by publication formats (e.g. PDF, EPUB, HTML). In order to keep the chart and statistics readable, a restricted amount of publication formats is considered. If the number of publication formats exceeds that amount, only the summarized book statistics are shown.

The press managers are provided with a few settings possibilities: to enable or disable the display of the statistics, to define the type of the chart (bar or line), and to define the maximum number of publication formats that should be considered.

Please, have a look at the screenshots and the video to see how it works and looks like:

We implemented it also for the OJS 3.0 and have lots of ideas for further improvements (e.g. further display options and aggregation possibilities). Thus, stay tuned and tell us what you think about it!
