Status Report on PKP and Article-Level Metrics

By Kevin Stranack

For the past year, PKP has been developing and testing an implementation of the open source Article-Level Metrics application called Lagotto (formerly ALM) from the Public Library of Science (PLOS). We invited a small number of journals from the OJS user community to act as the test group for this beta service as we determine the associated costs and support requirements to provide a fully functional and stable service for the thousands of OJS journals in our community. Establishing a new, stable service, involving multiple data inputs, is no small feat, given our limited resources.

At this point, we plan to continue in this limited beta mode for at least another 6-9 months before inviting additional participants, but will release updates as this work continues. PKP remains committed to offering an open source article-level metrics service to all interested OJS journals.

For OJS journals interested in implementing article-level metrics in the near term, other services can be used with OJS, including Plum Analytics (plugin available from the University of Pittsburgh Library here). We are also consulting with Digital Science and Altmetric to develop a plugin for their service and will have more information soon.

Users interested in metrics should also check out the powerful range of internal statistics that can be found in recent releases of OJS. These statistics include article abstract and fulltext view counts, time to review, time to publication, percentage accepted, etc. with details here.

If you have any additional questions or want to check on the status of the ALM service, please watch our blog, follow us on Twitter, join our Facebook group, or contact PKP at pkp.contact@gmail.com. Thank you for your patience and continuing support.
