Change OJS forms

Postby elcvia » Thu Jul 19, 2007 7:57 am

We are an online open journal ( and we
want to migrate from a home-made software tool to OJS. However we
noticed that a couple of features that we need are not implemented
in OJS and we would like some advices.

In our journal, each editor has associated a list of keywords and
topics of interest to which he is related and is an expert. Once a
paper is received, the editor selection is done depending on the
match between the keywords of the paper and the editors. OJS
currently supports a text field for reviewing interests, but does
not support a controlled list of keywords, in addition when
authors send their papers, there is no field to introduce keyword
information. Is there a possibility to include this feature in a
new version of OJS? If yes, when it would be released?

If there are no plans to provide this feature, which is the
procedure to modify OJS code to implement this kind of
functionalities? We have a similar problem with the revision
procedure, in our journal, reviewers have to answer a short form
and then have a text area to write their comments, but with OJS
only a text area is provided. How can new fields be added? And
how the database can be modified to store this new information
while continuing to provide the same behaviour of the whole

Thanks in advance,

Hi Elcvia,

We do have plans to move to a controlled list for reviewer/editor interests, but it will not be in place for the next release (2.2, due this fall). If you're interested in implementing it, I'd strongly suggest waiting until 2.2 is released before you begin, as we'll be overhauling metadata storage and it'll be difficult to merge your changes in with the new system. If you can stand to use the free-form field in the interim, I'd be happy to suggest how to implement controlled lists once 2.2 is available (or once the major changes have been merged into CVS).
