OJS and linked open data

Postby andrew » Fri Nov 08, 2013 10:35 am

Hi Alec, all

At the Open University we're intending to publish (some of) the data from our OJS hosted JIME journal (http://jime.open.ac.uk) as linked open data on http://data.open.ac.uk. The aim is facilitate of machine exploration and discoverable of links between our journal's data and other data on the web.

To do this, we intend to create a way of exporting the JIME data in OJS as linked open data, and we'd like to feed anything we create back into OJS e.g. as a plugin.
I've searched the tech and developer forum and can't find any mention of questions or answers related to "linked open data" so I thought I'd ask if any one out there is also investigating this so as to avoid duplication of effort.

Please do let me know.
Also if do let me know if you would be interested in using a plugin to export a linked open data version of your journal.

(By the way, the one reference to "linked open data" on site:http://pkp.sfu.ca I could find was a paper i.e http://pkp.sfu.ca/pkp2013/paper/view/381.)

Hi Andrew,

We do have a current project that has similar requirements, and there is a plugin in development, though you'd have to adapt it to your own purposes. I'll ask the developer in charge of that to jump in with some details.

Hi Andrew (and thanks Alec for pulling me in),

We've been working for the past little while on a Sloan-funded OJS plugin which will allow deposit and linking of data with an instance of the Dataverse Network (http://thedata.org/). While, as Alec indicated, it's been developed against the Dataverse API, you may find that the guts are reusable for your purpose -- the plugin leverages version 2 of the SWORD protocol (http://swordapp.org/sword-v2/), and the interfaces modifications that it makes to OJS ought to be relatively consistent with other, similar use cases.

We're just beginning the external testing phase at the moment, but if you're interested, feel free to pull it down from https://github.com/jwhitney/ojs. Note that OJS currently ships with a conflicting older version of the SWORD library which needs to be replaced if you're installing the plugin (indicated in the Github readme); a future version should correct this.

Let me know if you could use any more information.

Hi Alex and Alec,

Thanks for sharing this, the OJS Dataverse plugin looks very interesting.

Our initial thought have been about publishing data about the articles and authors, with a view to facilitating e.g. connections with teaching and learning resources, and generating e.g. navigable pathways for learners to follow. The potential to link research data into this is very interesting, and offers a whole new avenue to explore which is interesting in itself, whether or not the plugin is directly useful for our initial aims (though at first glance it looks like it could be).
I'll pass on the links you provided to my colleagues with expertise in in linked open data, and we'll take it from there

Thanks again,
