Subscription management - what systems do others use?

Postby jayfitzsimmons » Thu Sep 02, 2010 10:17 am

I would like to get people's input on how they manage their online + print subscriptions.

I am transitioning our print-only journal to print+OJS. So far I have been focused on uploading old issues' content to the site, but that is nearing completion and soon I'll be ready to add subscribers' information to our OJS system. This morning I met with our journal's current subscription manager to learn his current system. It's a rolodex, and he uses a typewriter to make mailing address labels. He knows how to use e-mail, but his computer knowledge is minimal. His system seems very elaborate and complicated, with multiple stacks of paper and a system of operations I still don't really understand. It's making me panic, because I'm afraid we'll need to find a new subscription manager, and develop a new subscription system, once we transition to OJS.

How do other subscription-based print+online OJS journals manage:
-Payment information (from individual and institutional subscribers, authors' page charges, etc)
-Address information for mailings (when you're ready to mail an issue to those subscribers eligible for print copies, how do you find out who they are, what their addresses are, and print address labels for them)
-Integration between non-OJS systems' information and OJS, to ensure OJS and whatever other subscription-management system(s) you use have the same information.
-Whatever other issues I haven't even thought of, or suggestions. What advice can you give me on how to set up a new subscription management system?

Thank you in advance to whatever advice people can offer.
