What to do if you have a technical problem with OJS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OJS Editorial Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Full text for back issues, abstracts only for recent issues

Postby brianlee » Wed Nov 14, 2007 10:11 am

We are digitizing the back issues of a journal and the editors would like to make the back issues freely available, but for the most recent issues only make the abstracts available. The full-text of these recent issues will then be opened up on a rolling basis. What is the best way to achieve this with OJS? Can we load the entire run of the journal and then choose a setting at the issue or article level that controls access? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi brianlee,

Make your journal subscription-based in Setup; once that's done, you can choose access settings on a per-issue basis as Editor on the issue's Issue Data page, including assigning a rolling open access date. You can override issue-level subscription settings for each article on the Issue's Table of Contents page (as Editor).

Alec,

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't think this achieves exactly what we want. For the most recent issues we want the abstracts to be available freely available--but with the way you suggest it looks like the abstracts are also behind the subscription login. Is there a way to make the abstracts of otherwise restricted articles freely available?

Hi Brian,

Check Setup page 2; if you open the access settings there ("Unregistered users can view the journal site" and "Unregistered users can view the full text of published articles", the latter of which should be superseded by any subscription settings), unregistered users should be able to view abstracts.

Thanks Alec. I think we've got this working now, but had to do a couple of extra steps, which I'm posting here for reference:

We had to create "Subscription Manager" role and set the Delayed Access options.

Then, as Editor, we had to go to the issue's Table of Contents page and choose "Default" (rather than "Open Access", which was for some reason selected by default) for each article in the issue.
