Problems with .pdf embedded image layout/galley upload

Postby howlett » Mon Sep 10, 2007 5:30 pm

Hi:

I've got a manuscript with several pix in it (.jpgs and .png). I couldn't upload either an original
.doc file or a .pdf file to the editing/layout/galley screen - things just spun or uploaded an empty
galley. I converted the pix to all .jpgs and same problem. Ditto when I converted them to
.picts. However when I stripped out the pix I could upload the original .doc file, the
stripped .pdf version, and the .jpgs separately. Any idea what is going on? Can't I upload
a file (either .doc or .pdf) that has embedded images?

Any help much appreciated,

Mike

Hi Mike,

It sounds like you're encountering file size limits. See http://pkp.sfu.ca/support/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1877 for more information.

Alec:

Thanks for your reply. I checked out the post you mentioned (see below) but didn't see
a fix mentioned. Is there one?

Mike

p.s. The original .pdf with 5 images is about 2.5 mb

2) Uploads of large files fail inexplicably.

A: This can be caused by certain Apache or PHP settings.

Apache 2.x has a LimitRequestBody directive that, if set to a low number, can
lead to this behaviour. In particular, the default PHP packages for recent
versions of Red Hat Linux set LimitRequestBody to 524288 bytes in
/etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf.

Low values for the PHP ini settings like post_max_size (default "8M"),
upload_max_filesize (default "8M"), and memory_limit (default "8M") can also
cause this problem.

Hi Mike,

The fix is to increase the limits in those settings. If you're running on a shared host, you may be able to override the limits using a .htaccess file, but this will depend on your ISP; you're probably best off asking them if this is possible.

Alec:

Seems our limit was 2.0 mb, as an upload at 1.7 mb worked fine. Meantime we'll work on
a permanent fix.

Thanks very much for your (very prompt and helpful!) assistance.
