Forum rules
What to do if you have a technical problem with OJS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OJS Editorial Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

subscriptions and pdf access

Postby Krekels » Thu Feb 15, 2007 9:31 am

hello,

I thought i had solved this problem, but somehow it reappears:

We have delayed open access and use the subscription module
We don't ask unsubscribed users to register
Unsubscribed and unregistered users are allowed to view open access pdf's

As long as an issue is not open access, only users with a subscription can view the subscribed PDF's. Subscribers either log in or are recognized by IP-adress.

This translated in the following setting in the set up menu and issue data:

checked: Allow users to register with the journal site as: readers
checked: Unregistered users can view the journal site.
checked: Unregistered users can view the full text of published articles.

checked: The journal will require subscriptions to access some or all of its contents.

issue data
Access
Access status: Subscription
Open access date November 01 2007

Now it appears that non-subscribers can view PDF's from the issue wich has the open access date set to november 01 2007.

You can try it by accessign the current issue mentioned: http://library.wur.nl/ojs/index.php/njas/issue/current

My question whether there is a conflict between the policy settings and subscription settings?

Kind regards,

Hubert Krekels

Hi Hubert,

In the Editor's Table of Contents interface for the issue, is the article access set to "Default" or "Open Access"?

re: subscriptions and access to pdf

Hi Alec,

I am sorry to have bothered you, but we discovered that the subscription manager made a mistake: if you add very long ip -ranges by copy/paste, sometimes the fieldlength (255 chars) is not sufficient. The ssytem gives a warning but if you neglect this warning an incomplete range is written to the system. The incomplete ip range ending with an asterisk can lead to a very large number of computers having access. Which in our case happened indeed.

I am Sorry for the inconvenience.

ip range

I actually came accross the 255 character limit with IP ranges for my journal too. I think that this field should probably be much longer and the form for it should be multi-line since its hard to type IP addresses all on one line.

Hi all,

Noted -- I've created a bugzilla entry for this against the next release (http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2675). The field should be bigger in OJS 2.2.
