The public article ID allows you to assign "keywords" to articles that can be used in URLs rather than the numeric system-generated ID. For example, if a URL to an article is http://myHost/ojs2/index.php/demo/article/view/572/41
, you can use public IDs to change it to http://myHost/ojs2/index.php/demo/article/view/someCustomId/41
. This is handy when using rewritten URLs in HTML galleys to hyperlink between articles. I expect we'll be using the same approach to allow galley fetching by label, so that you'll be able to use URLs like http://myHost/ojs2/index.php/demo/article/view/someCustomId/html
This can also be useful for keeping track of a type of article identifier that OJS doesn't otherwise support.
