Add additional type of books?

Postby Garant » Mon Apr 07, 2014 5:11 am

Hi!
I've a question: how to add additional type of books in "type of book" box?
Now the systems supports only "monograph" and "edited volume" types what is very little. We have more types of it in our organization.
Thanks!

Hi Garant,

You could probably define new type constants in classes/monograph/Monograph.inc.php and then modify the requisite submission templates to allow those options.

Hi Garant,

Note that the "type of book" selector isn't just passive metadata -- it affects the workflow, in that edited volumes serve as collections. If you see some unexpected complexity in the use of that data, this is why.

Hi Alec!
It's bad news for me.
Won't you consider it like a feature?
I think not only out institution will need to expand book types.

Hi Garant,

Can you describe the sorts of types you're considering?

Hi Garant,

There's some overlap here with the "Type" metadata field, which is currently a plain-text field. A few options come to mind...
  • Allow the Manager to define a fixed list of submission types, which *don't* affect the "Type of book" (monograph vs. edited volume) field, but do restrict the "Type" free-text field to a fixed list
  • Allow the Manager to define a fixed list of submission types, which *do* affect the "Type of book" (monograph vs. edited volume) field, in that each submission type implies a workflow
  • Others?

Hi Garant,

We talked about this internally and decided that the clearest thing to do would be to change the wording around the "type of book" field to make it clear that it's not a metadata field. See the bug entry and patch here: http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=8713

Hi Alec!
Thank you for your answer!
Just to make it clear: does this types change the workflow after the provided patch or it's just a static selection which doesn't affect the workflow?

Hi Garant,

This form field (previously "type of book", now "type of editorial workflow") only affects workflow and was never intended as metadata. For metadata, there are fields available during the submission process that correspond to the Dublin Core set; that's where the type of metadata you were originally wishing to include should go.

The effect of the "type of editorial workflow" is to distinguish the way chapters are handled -- in an edited volume, each chapter is typically by a different author.
