What to do if you have a technical problem with OMP:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OMP Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OMP Development subforum.

Tracking number of downloads from individual OMP Presses

Postby rootl » Fri Aug 09, 2013 6:11 am

Hello,

We would like to track number of downloads of published PDFs from individual presses. This is not an unreasonable request.

We currently have Google Analytics on our OMP instance and it works well for tracking visits and hits.

I have found analytic code for tracking number of downloads here:
http://www.blastam.com/blog/index.php/2 ... lytics-v2/

Do you have any advice for adding this code to our OMP instance?

If not, is there anything else you can recommend for tracking downloads?

Thank you.

Hi rootl,

We'll likely port the Google Analytics plugin from OJS to OMP. In the meantime, I'd suggest putting the Google Analytics urchin into templates/catalog/book/book.tpl. Because .tpl files are Smarty templates, you'll need to make sure { and } characters (which Smarty uses) are properly escaped; the best way to do that is to put the Google Analytics code between {literal} and {/literal} tags.

Hi,

Privacy aware users (like me) disable google analytics by plugins and I would not want to run a side that is tracking users and sends the stuff to google. So it would be great to have some pdf download counters. This is important for research agencies, for authors and for editors and it would be great to have this functionality. The DFG (German research foundation) has some guidelines on how such counters have to be implemented. I could try to dig them out.

It would be great to have such a feature.

Hi Stefan,

We've just rewritten stats tracking (which will be released in OJS 2.4.3); we're planning to release that work as well in OMP 1.1. See our milestones chart at http://pkp.sfu.ca/wiki/index.php/General_Software_Milestones for current release plans. Would you be interested in providing us with some details on what kind of stats and reports you would find useful for OMP?

Hi Alec,

Great!

This is the call for proposals by the DFG for OA publications which we applied to:

http://www.dfg.de/download/pdf/foerderu ... aphien.pdf

They say:

Nachfrage nach und Nutzung der Publikation sind für die Autoren leicht und eindeutig nachvollziehbar und mittels einer standardisierten Methode, z.B. entsprechend des aktuellen COUNTER Code of Practice for E-Resources, messbar;

Which means: The request for and usage of the publication are verifiable for authors and measurable for instance according to the COUNTER Code of Practice for E-Resources.

Can that be done? This would be great for the funding agencies.

Apart from this stats like the ones provided by academia.edu would be great. A world map that displays the readers of books, series, individual authors, or the press. Stats according to the day, month, year.

Best

Hi Stefan,

We had been considering targeting COUNTER for Books, but that appears to have been superseded by the unified COUNTER code of practice (see http://www.projectcounter.org/code_practice.html). I'll suggest to our team that we target the latter.

Greetings,

Any status updates on the COUNTER inclusion for OMP?

We are interested in incorporating it into the current version of OMP 1.0 similar to the OJS Counter statistics.

Thanks.

Hi rootl,

What will probably happen is that we'll incorporate our massive rewrite of the statistics framework that went into OJS 2.4.3 into OMP 1.1. I believe that Bruno is working on that currently.

Any updates on the statistics framework for 1.1? Particularly interested in the COUNTER report similar to OJS.

Thanks.

Hi rootl,

OMP 1.1 was released last week and does contain the statistics framework. Have you tried it yet?

Jason,

Greetings. I have tried the Statistics framework on OMP 1.1 clean install and an upgraded instance of our site on a dev server.

There appears to be a bug or something not right with statistics report generation, where it just 'hangs': viewtopic.php?f=40&t=11817

Others also have run into this problem: viewtopic.php?f=40&t=11830

Thanks.
