directory specified for uploaded - error

Postby vikozo » Fri Feb 21, 2014 2:44 am

Hello
i am new and already have a first Installation question.

i have to test the Software - it mean to install it and start to "play" around, then i will have to give a feedback - later, i belive i will have to install it new on a new server.

so the testing is
http://oaj.kozo.ch/

the error i got is
Errors occurred during installation:
The directory specified for uploaded files does not exist or is not writable.

if i log in with FTP to the place i should be i have a
directory structure with
web
log
backup

in web is the homepages
in Log are log files
and so on

i have done a directory
/private/oaj-files with 777

more of the server file structure i don't know!
The file is not accesible from the net. for the Software it would be two step down in the structure and then /private

so the question, ist the path i give not long enoungh or what did i miss?

have a nice day
vincent

Hi vincent,

Have you read the installation instructions that are present in the docs/README file that came with OJS? You'll need to create a new directory for uploaded files and make sure that it is writeable by the web server. It will need to be indicated in your config.inc.php file as well.

Jason

Hello
thanks for your feedback
yes the new directory is created!

but this part
config.inc.php
i believed it would be written in - with the install-web-form, because there i added the path.

so i had a look at the file - do i have also to add there all information about the database? Why do i have to enter them in the install-web-form too?

have a nice day

Hi vincent,

The web installer will try to create the config file if it can, but it does need the file to be writeable to do that. Otherwise the installer will give you the config file and you'll need to make the changes yourself.

thanks for all the feedback.
so there is no reason to change the config file by hand.
But i still do not understand why - It is not accepting the directory path and what i could do to accept it.
i don't have any error with the installation with DB and so - just this file structure problem

Hi vikozo,

Does the directory actually exist on the server? Can you verify that it does? More importantly, are you sure that the web server can access it? Some times web servers are 'jailed' in specific directories for security reasons, or there may be other restrictions in place.

to both Yes, i could check it with FTP

the other one i am not sure.
the FTP access i have is a step down from the homepage
let say the webpage is
/web/
so the files would be one step down an then
/private/oaj-files with 777

how to make sure the web is not jailed and which file would open this on the Apache Server?

have a nice day

Hi vincent,

Also, please keep in mind that the paths are relative. Beginning a directory path with a / means that it's a top level directory, not a directory nested in a folder. If you're already in a folder called web, you probably want something like /full/path/to/web/private/files or something like that. And Ideally, your files directory shouldn't be inside of a directory that is publicly accessible. It doesn't need to be accessible, just writable by the server.

Jason
