non-journal publishing with OJS

Postby jrubin » Fri Oct 25, 2013 10:43 am

Tulane University currently runs OJS to publish peer-reviewed journals. We are starting another tier of publishing services for non-peer-reviewed publications such as institute reports, academic papers, department magazines, etc.

Is anyone using OJS for this purpose? Is it possible to run both journals and non-journal publications on the same instance of OJS but on different websites? Or would it be best to install another instance of OJS?

Many thanks,

Hi Jeff,

I can't think of any examples mixing journals with non-journals, but some of the considerations are written up here in the FAQ. Perhaps the major consideration is whether you'll need to modify the application to handle non-journal content, and if so, what the ramifications will be considering that you'll be hosting both types from the same codebase. (Modifications that take this into consideration are possible, but will probably involve a lot of conditional statements to manage both types.) Note also that while it's fairly easy to split a single installation into multiples, it's very difficult to join separate installations back together again into one while preserving content.

Thanks Alec. We definitely don't want to mix journals and non-journals. The easiest way may be to run another instance and brand it differently.
