What to do if you have a technical problem with OJS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OJS Editorial Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Corrupt fc-journalSettings-1.php

Postby bdalgarno » Wed Sep 04, 2013 1:24 pm

We are running OJS 2.3.6.0 and have been encountering corruption in the file fc-journalSettings-1.php in the cache directory at random intervals (once every day or so) over the past 10 days. In each case the file ends abruptly within a string inside an array, but the actual place in which it ends varies each time. The problem shows itself as a blank page presented to users of the system. Restoring the cached file by using the clear data caches option in site administration fixes the problem but it continues to reoccur. The system (which is heavily used by a team of editors and a large reader and author community) seems to be functioning fine in between times.

Hi bdalgarno,

That file should only get regenerated or modified when your journal settings change, so I wonder if you aren't getting hit by another system that has been compromised and is looking for modifiable files. What are your file permissions and SAPI setup like?

Thanks Alec,

I have passed this on to the sys admin of our hosting server.

I have also scanned the error log files and have found the following:

The error leading to the blank page (after corruption of fc-journalSettings-1.php) is the following:
PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE in /app/ascilite-cms/htdocs/ajet/submission/cache/fc-journalSettings-1.php on line 437

One other error that appears to be happening regularly when the system is functioning normally is the following:
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined method PublishedArticle::getDateModified() in /app/ascilite-cms/htdocs/ajet/submission/cache/t_compile/%%82^824^824FE270%%atom.tpl.php on line 24

I just wanted to pass this on (especially the latter) in case it is relevant to this problem.

Hi bdalgarno,

The web feed plugin error is filed and fixed at http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6729; you can apply the patch there to resolve it. It's not related to this template compilation problem.

Can you post the contents of a corrupted compiled template?

FYI, one option that may correct this (at least temporarily) is to set the contents of the cache/t_compile directory read-only once they're compiled properly; this will prevent OJS from re-generating the templates and thus it will rely on the already-compiled templates. Note that of course if you change any .tpl files you'll have to relax the restrictions so that the template can be recompiled. But at least in the interim this may provide an alternative to occasionally finding the site broken.

As above, however -- what are your file permissions and SAPI configuration like?

Our sysadmin people have migrated our OJS system to a new server and upgraded to 2.3.7.0 at the same time and this appears to have resolved the problem.

Thanks for your help and advice with this.

Regards,

Barney
