use of Phar versus Tar for patches

WE have OJS .2.3.8 and want to patch it to the latest version. The instructions call for TAR but that is not available on a windows platform. Can we use the PHAR command and change the scripts for patching? That brings the question...is it better to host this on a linux platform versus a virtual windows platform? The windows platform works great so far. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers!

Hi radjr,
Tar is available for windows -- just google "tar for windows" -- all you have to do is configure config.inc.php with its location. I'm not familiar with phar, but if it's compatible with the same command-line options as tar, you can use it instead.
A windows server should be fine; anecdotally we've heard that it performs a little slower than Linux because of the characteristics of the NTFS filesystem, but unless you're seeing heavy load (and there are lots of other options for optimization that could come before a platform change) you should be fine.
