What to do if you have a technical problem with OJS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OJS Editorial Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Using OJS 2.3.8 running on debian linux, and testing a new journal.

When I submit using wither the quick submit plugin or the standard 5-step author procedure, no errors appear to be generated, and all submitted info appears to be in the database.. However when I (as editor) look at the Submission Summary I only get the author name (not even the title) and all the other info described in the userguide is missing.

I would appreciate even speculation at this point. I suspect that something is wrong with the whole installation OR there is some config setting wrong. BUt even with all debugging mentioned in the userguide turned on, nothing seems to show up as an error. And apparently we don't have access to the server logs.

Hello mcwilson,

I posted a similar question (I believe you have the same problem!).
This is one way to start finding the solution.
Since we do not own the journal posing the question, we cannot execute Alec's query to check what happens.
Try that suggestion and post your results, so the PKP team can help you figure a solution.

Ramon

Thanks very much for this suggestion. I am not sure I have enough access to do this, but when our IT people get back in about 2 weeks, we will try it. I did try to switch on verbose database output and found nothing with null locale.

Feliz natal!

We have now tried the suggestion of looking at locale. That didn't work. We have reinstalled OJS 2.4.1 and fresh database from scratch and the same error occurs in the new journal. I believe the problem is exactly as described by Ramon. Any other solution ideas?

After replicating the whole installation on another machine, we saw some error messages, of the following type:

ojs2 has produced an error\n Message: WARNING: strtotime() [<a href='function.strtotime'>function.strtotime</a>]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function.

This appears to be the main cause of the problem but we are not sure. We have switched from the Debian setup to another server (Mac OSX) and the problem has now disappeared.
