A simple question

Are you an Editor, Author, or Journal Manager in need of help? Want to talk to us about workflow issues? This is your forum.

Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

A simple question

Postby mar » Mon Jul 09, 2012 4:57 am

Good Morning,
I have read "OJS in an hour" but, first, I need to publish 'old' articles of the last years that, until today, are published in a web site (which will then be closed).
It seems a simple upload of full texts grouped by section made by admin.

I'm actually unable to do this.... Excuse me for this, probably, trivial question

Can you help me, please?

Hello mar,

Take a look at the documentation here.
If your previous version is in a database format, it would be easier to implement a script to generate the XML to import the data.
Otherwise, simulate the process within OJS.
There's a Quick Submit/Import Export Plugin in the Import/Export Plugins section.

Thank you.
By reading the paper suggested I have found sample.xml and also this more simple version:

<issues>
<issue published="false" current="false">

Literature

<volume>1</volume>
<number>2</number>
<year>2006</year>

Article

<abbrev locale="it_IT">ART</abbrev>

Test

Abstract text...
<pages>8-18</pages>
<date_published>2006-08-01</date_published>

<firstname>Giorgio</firstname>
<middlename> </middlename>
<lastname>Toni</lastname>

<galley>
PDF
<file><href mime_type="application/pdf" src="toni.pdf"/></file>
</galley>

</issue>

In OJS the Section is created and the article toni.pdf file is in the same folder of the xml file, but I get this message (I translate from Italian....):

The article "Test" in section "Article" of issue "Literature" missing proof file

Can you help me please?

Hello Mar,

Are you sure the path to "toni.pdf" is correct?
OTOH, it should be a full path to the file, otherwise it won't be imported...
If it's in your local machine, you need to add the full path (on Windows, C:\folder\path\to\toni.pdf), but I'm not 100% sure this is your problem.

You could also use a ASCII converter tool, to convert the PDF to ASCII and embed the PDF into the XML.

Thank you Ramon,
Unfortunately full path file does not influence the negative result..

I don't undersand:
...You could also use a ASCII converter tool, to convert the PDF to ASCII and embed the PDF into the XML...

but I read:
<galley>
PDF
<file><href mime_type="application/pdf" src="http://...../issue/some.pdf"/></file>
</galley>

I think this is the 'call' for article pdf file on not?

thank you again

Hello Mar,

Yes, that is normally the path to the file.
I'm not sure if the path needs to be a URL, or the <file> tag needs to change in order to import from local folder.
PKP developers can answer that question in more detail.

Regarding the comment about ASCII, it's because there are tools to convert any document format to ASCII characters.
Then, you can embed that into the XML, instead of the path.
However, maybe the file tag needs different attributes as well, I don't remember correctly.

If you export an issue or an article with OJS's Native Import/Export plugin and edit the XML on a text editor you'll see what I mean.
