Authors with a single name

We have recently begun publishing a journal with significant ties to Indonesia: Excellence in Higher Education. As such, many submissions have authors from Indonesia who publish under a single name; this is a common occurrence in authors from Indonesia and also in other cultures as well. In OJS, first and last names are required for all authors. As such, we have been temporarily been inserting the text “[none]” or a comma into the first name field in the metadata for our journal. However, a long-term solution is needed. This affects the metadata and the “how to cite” function, and it also most likely has other downstream effects. We also decided not to “un-require” the first name text field ourselves because of potential unknown effects within the OJS system.

We do know that author names are not required for CrossRef metadata or MARC records. We are proposing that future versions of OJS do not require the first name text field and require only the surname text field. This change should also be designed to generate proper citation records with the “how to cite tool” by omitting the first name field in the citation. If there are other implications for this change we have not anticipated, we’d be happy to discuss them with you.

Thanks for posting! Bug 6879 addresses this, though I will add a thread to this report so that we have a further use case to work from.

I have the same problem. We are in Indonesia, several people only have single name. I hope for next release of OJS, it should be fixed already.
