Layout version vs. galley version

Hello, all--

I'm a new user with very little previous editing experience.

I'm uploading articles that were previously reviewed and are all ready for publication.

I get the submission through review by submitting as author, then assigning myself as section editor, accepting the submission, and sending to copy-editing.

Then, I skip copyediting and go straight to the layout section.

Questions:

1. I discovered that if I upload a "layout version" first, I cannot upload a galley. Is that the way it's supposed to work?

2. As I understand it, the Galley version is the version that the reader can see. So shouldn't that be the last thing that gets uploaded?

3. What function is the layout version supposed to serve?

Hi Kenkle,

Yes, galley formats are the formats presented to the readers, e.g. PDF and HTML. The Layout Version is the source document that is used to create the PDF, HTML, etc, and is generally to be used when there are separate editorial roles that need to be coordinated (such as a separate layout editor).

Are you trying to upload a galley as Section Editor? The Section Editor should always be able to upload a galley format. Layout Editors, however, can only upload galleys once they've been requested to do so. (If you're performing multiple editorial roles, I'd suggest doing so as Editor rather than by enrolling in the additional editing roles.)

I think I was trying it as editor. Will try as section editor if it comes to that again.

Does there need to be a Layout version? I think if I did not make one there would not be a "details" link in the TOC

Hi kenkle,

The "Details" link replaces the "Abstract" link for articles in sections that do not support abstracts; the presence or absence of a layout version should not affect this.
