Hello, I am part of the editorial board of a law journal at the University of Victoria. We are currently planning to become open access and will be using the OJS install at our school to accomplish this. My question is about managing subscribers to our print edition. Currently we do this with an excel spreadsheet and we print labels for each subscriber and try to keep track of payments manually. It hasn't been working well.
Our subscriptions manager was considering OJS for helping us to manage our subscriptions. There are some features that look helpful such as automated renewal reminder emails. But as we looked at the software we had two concerns relating to the requirement that we create a user account for each of our subscribers:
It appears that with our school-based OJS install we can see all of the users created by any journal at the University of Victoria. If we used OJS for subscriptions, would we have to create a user account for each subscriber, thereby making our subscriptions available to other journals here at UVic? We have questions about the privacy implications of that. Do you have any comments on that issue?
I see that there is an automated process for importing lists of subscribers via XML. Does this include the creation of passwords and usernames for them? How does that work? We also don't want to hassle our subscribers with the necessity of having to manage yet another online account. Is there anything that can address that concern?
Thank you very much for any general thoughts that you have on this issue as we begin to explore solutions.
