How to use Google Apps as email server

Postby lixh » Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:23 am

dear Sir,

We had installed an webmail as email server in our web server, but it seems work not very well. In fact, some emails got lost and some were bounced.

We applied a Google Apps for our journal, and it looks work well in email sending. We applied accounts for all of our section editors.
What we set in the config.inc.php is:

; SMTP server settings
smtp_server = ssl://smtp.gmail.com
smtp_port = 465

; Enable SMTP authentication
; Supported mechanisms: PLAIN, LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, and DIGEST-MD5
smtp_auth = PLAIN
smtp_username = raa@raa-journal.org
smtp_password = ourpassword

But there is still a problem, all the emails are sent from raa@raa-journal.org, even the section editor and the author who registered use their own email, and if the receiver reply the email, the email will be directly to raa@raa-journal.org. It in some extent influence the communication between the author and section editor and between the section editor and reviewer.

I wonder if you know any way to resolve this problem. I mean how to set in our server.

Thank you in Advance.

Sincerely,
Xianghua

Hi Xianghua,

There is some discussion about this problem over at http://pkp.sfu.ca/support/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5116&p=19870&hilit=gmail#p19870; In short, Gmail is designed to only send emails from the account you have with them, using your account's name as the 'from' field.

Cheers,

Hi Xianghua,

FYI, I've just heard of a way to allow yourself to use different email addresses using your GMail SMTP account: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ctx=mail&answer=22370.

Cheers,
Matt
