I have adapted CSS from another site I like and it seems to be working well with one exception. No matter what I do in the common.css, my font remains Times New Roman. Is there another file I am overlooking? I've flushed my template cache to no avail.

Have you checked to see if some other stylesheet is overriding your modified stylesheet? Check the HTML source to see if any other stylesheets are being included after your common.css stylesheet.
