Performance OJS with large amounts of data

Hello Guys,

Work BIREME where we have an installed OJS to 47 magazines, with nearly 20,000 articles, the performance problem is occurring at the time of listing the articles by the editor, the response time for this action is almost 1 minute.

We analyzed the number of queries to the database and found a very large number of queries, about 2500.

The server has a large processing power and memory.

Does anyone have any idea why so many queries to build a list pages.

You can try the patches at http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4737; these will optimize the Editor's interface considerably.

Hi Jamil,

Unfortunately not directly -- the patch was written for OCS 2.3. Back-porting it will not be a massive task, however; you'll need e.g. to change the "authors" table in the query to "presenters" and the respecitive "author_id" to "presenter_id", and likely a few other things.

Hi Jamil,

No, the patch linked above is not shipped with OJS 2.3.1. You can apply it to your 2.3.1 installation using the GNU patch tool if you like.

Two questions for performance problems:
a) After the long discussion above - is the indexing change now the only modification that is needed, or do the multiple patches mentioned in Bug 4737 need to be applied anyway ? In 2.3.1.1 only ? Also in 2.3.1.2 ?

b) in our OJS 2.3.1 on Windows, PHP5, we experience slow performance, too, but we do not have large amounts of data in our young journal. Is performance on 2.3.1.2 less an issue, with/withouth the mentioned patches and the indexing modification?

BTW: patching on windows hosted providers without command-line access is a pain, needing to FTP all the decompressed distribution files to the server. Would it really be impossible to give the OJS site manager an option to upgrade from "within" the system to the current version ? At least, typo3 can do it, too.
