New type of editor

Postby thestrup » Thu May 01, 2014 5:48 am

Dear PKP

We operate a server with 47 journals. And are growing. Thank you for a great software.
When we start a new journal we give courses and discuss with the editorial boards how to manage their editorial workflow.

It seems that the journal often needs a extra editorial level.
Would it be possible to create an issue editor which is in between the Editor and Section Editors?

Role Now:
Editor: Can Choose Section Editors for a givevn submission, can choose other Editors for a given submission, can see the workflow of other Editors… and much more….

Section Editors: performs the editorial process for articles delegated to the Section Editor by the Editor. Can not see the work of others.

My suggestion would be to create a third role:
A Issue/Theme Editor. The Issue/Theme Editor can perform a review process of articles delegated to the Issue/Theme Editor self by the mail Editor. The Issue/Theme Editor can choose Section Editors for the review process. The Issue/Theme editor can only see the editorial work of articles which the main Editor has send to the Issue/Theme Editor and the Sections Editors the Issue/Theme editor has redelegated articles to. And then only the articles the Issue/Theme Editor did send on.

I hope the description was clear.

Hi Jesper,

The place to look for this will be on OJS 3.0, which is currently under heavy development. It won't address everything you've suggested, but it does permit the creation of custom roles with limited control over their abilities to work within the system. For example, it wouldn't be possible to restrict the activities of the Issue Editor exactly as you've specified, but it would be possible to create that role and track assignments and decision-making. OJS 3.0 won't be released imminently -- we did an early alpha test this spring and the next step will be a beta, followed presumably by the full release -- but there will be tools to migrate content from OJS 2.4.x when it's released.
