Sorry Jason, I should have explained that the OJS instance for Economic Thought shares templates with its sibling publication World Economic Review at
http://wej.worldeconomicsassociation.orgSo the templates I've been amending are in that journal's OJS files. And to be clear, the variable $journalDescription is not being displayed for either journal.
I don't know why it's been set up like this (this was put in place before I became involved). Apologies for the confusion.

Hi Jake,
You just sort of confirmed what the issue is. You've correctly added the code to the AboutHandler.inc.php class, but the addition of {$journalDescription} in templates/about/index.tpl (in the templates directory for wej) is not there. Also, I looked in your database at the journal settings and there is no setting for journalDescription set.
Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason.
Many thanks for your time on this. I'm afraid time pressures have meant I've had to see different solutions to this problem, so yesterday I decided to remove $journalDescription from the template and found an alternative.
I'm puzzled that there was apparently nothing in the journalDescription field in the database though – I've had dummy text in there all the way through our exchange. Despite using the template files from the World Economic Review journal's set-up for the Economic Thought OJS instance, there's still a redundant set of files for ET, so perhaps there is also a redundant database for ET as well?
Either way, I've found an alternative solution to my problem, even if this specific problem hasn't been solved, so I'm happy to close this topic.
Thanks again for your time.

Hello all,
Just a quick reminder that there are 2 different fields for adding this info.
I'm not really sure about how OJS handles this, but in OCS, when creating a new conference as admin, you have the "description" field, which is displayed in the portal view.
The description added within the conference's settings is a different one.
Have you check as admin, the journal description fields (not as journal manager > journal setup)?
