Forum rules
What to do if you have a technical problem with OJS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OJS Editorial Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Space Requirements

Can anyone provide details on space required for OJS installation, and additionaly how much space @ 100 documents, 500 documents...

I know it would be estimates depending upon size of documents and all, but i need to document & cite this for a report.

Thank you,

Hello Damian,

Exact space requirements will vary massively depending on the way the system is used; however, here are a few guidelines for estimation:

  • The size of OJS itself is negligible (several megabytes) and will not change.
  • The size of the MySQL or PostgreSQL database is primarily defined by the full-text index; other data will be slow-growing by comparison. The size of the full-text index can be considered to increase proportionally as content is added.
  • When the full editing process offered by OJS is used, OJS maintains copies of submissions at each stage of the editing process. Therefore several versions of each document will remain on the server. (This does not apply when the import tool is used to bring articles into the system, as the editing process is not used.)
Here is a concrete example of the space requirements for a journal with a considerable number of back-issues.
  • Issues: >100
  • Articles: >3300
  • Published Articles: >1350 (mostly in both PDF and HTML)
  • Registered Users: >2150
  • Size of OJS Installation: <20MB (this will be roughly constant)
  • Size of MySQL dump: ~100MB
  • Size of files directory (submission files, galleys, etc): ~500MB

Thank you. That analysis is most helpful.
