Forum rules
What to do if you have a technical problem with OJS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OJS Editorial Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

OJS help needed - seeking webmaster

Postby themspress » Mon Jul 14, 2014 2:14 pm

Hello,

We have ran into multiple difficulties with OJS in our initial installation and now trying to upgrade. We are a team of medical students and have reached the limit of our computer programming abilities, so we are seeking help in the installation and backup of OJS. Are there any affordable webmaster services available for the OJS system? Our website is www.themspress.org and from there you can visit the journal website and see how slow it is operating.

Thank you,
TheMSPress

Hi TheMSPress,

Can you outline the kinds of problems you're having? If speed is the primary issue, it's likely more a question of your service provider than anything else -- if you're hosting on Windows and have the option, try moving to a Linux-based server. Also check that your cache files are being properly generated and maintained (e.g. make sure that everything in cache/ can be administered by your OJS scripts). If caching isn't working properly the site can slow tremendously.

Hi Alec,

Thank you very much for this help. We are not sure how to check on this cache issue. We are currently running through Dreamhost, FileZilla, on Mac. Are there perhaps any affordable options for getting technical support?

Thank you!

A lot of your slowdown (2/3rds in my sampling) is being caused by the custom block calling the WebRSS feed. Consider switching to the External Feeds block, using an asynchronous javascript call instead of the inline write that is being performed currently, or switching from the WebRSS provider.

Thank you so much for all of these suggestions. We have tried to make these changes to the best of our abilities but are still struggling. With our current workload, we are seeking an OJS master for hire. Does anyone have any suggestions about where to begin this search?

Thank you,
MSP

Hi MSP,

There several service providers listed here; we ourselves also provide hosting and services at pkpservices.sfu.ca.
