Problem with notify author email

Postby ramon » Thu Jul 11, 2013 4:42 pm

Hello all,

We are unsure if this is only an issue related to mailinator.com or some blocking rule in our network.
When the author's email in the metadata is from mailinator, for example, autor@mailinator.com, the email is not received.
After changing the email address manually, or in the metadata, to any other service (gmail, mailnesia, and others), the email gets sent.

Has anyone experienced this, or use mailinator for testing?
Any idea why this may be happening?

Hi Ramon,

Yes, Mailinator is blocked by many ISPs now, because they are often used as a source of spam. You can use a real time black hole query service to see for yourself. Just submit the IP address of one of their outgoing mail servers. You can probably get that from the headers of their email messages.

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the quick reply.
However, just to clear things up, we are not sending emails from mailinator. We are only using it to get emails sent to test users, so they are assigned mailinator accounts.
Meaning, OJS (and our servers) is sending the email TO mailinator accoutns.
Does the fact that mailinator is blocked to send emails prevent it to receive?
We tested sending directly from the command line and mailinator did receive messages.

Hi Ramon,

Ah, okay. Yes, there are still issues with sending mail to Mailinator. I had a brief look at their FAQ and it seems as though *all* email sent to Mailinator is deleted within a few hours, even if it is not read. Also, emails with attachments are stripped away. It also seems as though they have a blanket policy of deleting mail that they aren't happy with: "Any email that Mailinator isn't happy with will never make it into the system."

Jason
