What to do if you have a technical problem with OCS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved. Please note that this FAQ is OJS-centric, but most issues are applicable to both platforms.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OCS Conference Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OCS Development subforum.

Fix request: variables by reference error in PHP 5.0.5

Postby squishymedia » Tue Apr 15, 2008 8:42 pm

hi all,

I'm installing OCS to evaluate it -- running into an immediate error that appears to be related to PHP 5.0.5.

Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in [snip]/ocs/classes/i18n/LocaleFile.inc.php on line 55

For various reasons I need to stick with PHP 5.0.5 on this particular box (has legacy code on it) so any fix suggestions for this error would be appreciated.

thanks!

Eric

Hi Eric,

This is a known bug in OCS and OJS. Here's how you can fix this: http://pkp.sfu.ca/support/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2027#p2027

Thanks for the quick response. For the record, here's what I did:

Code: Select all
$tmpElementOCSFix = LocaleFile::load($this->filename);
$this->cache->setEntireCache($tmpElementOCSFix);

That seemed to address the issue...

Hi Eric,

There's a new patch in bugzilla now for this: http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3373

It would be nice if you can revert your changes and try applying this patch. Let us know if you still experience any problems after applying the patch.
