What to do if you have a technical problem with OCS:

1. Search the forum. You can do this from the Advanced Search Page or from our Google Custom Search, which will search the entire PKP site. If you are encountering an error, we especially recommend searching the forum for said error.

2. Check the FAQ to see if your question or error has already been resolved. Please note that this FAQ is OJS-centric, but most issues are applicable to both platforms.

3. Post a question, but please, only after trying the above two solutions. If it's a workflow or usability question you should probably post to the OCS Conference Support and Discussion subforum; if you have a development question, try the OCS Development subforum.

Examples of OCS 2 Conferences?

Postby tshore » Thu Oct 18, 2007 2:42 am

I would like to see some examples of live OCS 2 conferences - especially those that have been customized (in both appearance and function). I'm having trouble getting going with my conferences this year because I can't wrap my head around how to setup and customize the sites.

Thank you.

Hi Trudy,

Since we're an open-source outfit and don't require registration of any sort, we actually don't have a definitive list of OCS conferences; we find them by searching Google e.g. for "Open Conference Systems" (include the quotes). However, since OCS 2.0 is a relatively fresh release, and since OCS 2.x and the more established OJS 2.x share the same basic design, I'd suggest having a look at the OJS journals listed on our website. Any customizations made to one will be adaptable to the other, including stylesheets etc.

Thanks Alec. Anyone else out there have a nice OCS 2 conference that I can take a look at?

Hi,

I think that it would be useful if we could get an example of an existing ocs or ojs instance
that has custom templates. Even though your documentation is really good, I have find
it daunting, as an ocs beginner, trying to find which file(s) I should modify to, say, add a server-wide logo to my ocs site.

Could it be possible to make available the templates of one of your hosted ojs or ocs sites? It would help lessening the learning curve.

Thanks :)

Hi Jose,

Most of the installations that we host are stock, i.e. do not have modifications to the templates. I'd suggest contacting the conference team directly if you see a conference that you like and want more information on their modifications.

If you want to add a site-wide logo, the files that you need to modify is templates/common/header.tpl (if you want to make HTML modifications) and/or styles/common.css (if you want to make CSS modifications). In the next release of both OJS and OCS, you'll be able to add a site-wide logo via the setup pages so no modifications will be necessary.

I'm still looking for other examples of customized OCS 2 conference sites. Isn't there anybody out there who has something to show us?

Here it is :)

Just have a look at http://www.teap.de. It is the website of a German psychology conference. So far, OCS 2 works without complaints, we have done a localization of the front end (the xml files will be contributed back to the development team).

Best regards

I finally have registration open for my two 2008 conferences. I will post them here as examples:

http://www.csbbcs.org/2008/
http://www.imrf.info/2008/

I also have a front page up for a 2010 conference:

http://www.prospectivememory.org/

While the template customization wasn't a big job, it did take me a while to figure it out. However, the code customizations I had to do were huge. To get the first two sites looking/working like this, I had to modify approximately 80 files (including OCS bug fixes). This has been a VERY stressful and costly experience. I look forward to the release of a much more mature OCS 2.1.

Hi Trudy,

Those sites look fantastic. Hopefully OCS 2.1 will address many of the issues you've had, and I'll repeat Alec's suggestion that any suggestions or code contributions you have to offer are particularly appreciated.

Would you mind if we put up a screenshot and a link to one of these conferences under our "Featured Conference" heading at http://pkp.sfu.ca? We like to promote sites that have been particularly well turned out.

Cheers,
James
