EPUB export option?

Postby lhumble » Sun Apr 10, 2011 9:09 pm

I am a Master of Publishing student at Simon Fraser, and have been anxiously awaiting the release of OMP. A group of other students and I just completed a draft for a better practices guide for small publishers on EPUB production. I'm wondering if OMP will include any plugins/export options that will facilitate EPUB production? (e.g. exporting as clean XHTML, bridges to Calibre or Sigil)

Hi lhumble,

I'm not sure if OMP will immediately include ePub production facilitation mechanisms, but I believe it will down the road (among other things). I'll ask a developer to get back to you about that specifically. I'm also interested in your better practices guide -- is this guide going to be published as open access, by any chance? I'd love to hear a bit more about what the guide covers, and what your plans for it are.

Cheers,
James

Hi James,

Glad to hear that EPUB will be worked in somewhere. I'm not familiar with Lemon8, so wasn't sure how/if that would help matters.

Our "best" practices guide quickly turned into a "better" practices guide when we realized what a dog's breakfast exporting can be: one of the main stumbling blocks was the absence of a clean export option from desktop publishing programs like InDesign, which is what most publishers are using for design/layout. We ended up outlining three alternative workflows (editing/applying styles in InDesign, Dreamweaver, or Sigil), all of which end with an open source tool like Calibre or Sigil. In our guide, we also provide a general introduction to the EPUB format, its features and limitations, and some considerations about ebook design, validation, distribution, etc. The guide will be available for free as an EPUB or through our wiki in the near future: I'll make sure to post the link here!

I have been speaking with scholarly presses about their electronic publishing practices, and it appears that everyone is outsourcing EPUB production. I really hope that OMP will offer an efficient, affordable alternative so that these conversions can be performed in house and with minimal fuss.

Cheers,
Linnet

Hi Linnet,

Sounds great on all fronts! Posting the link here would be great, and we would also be happy to add the link to our list of documentation, eg. at http://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs_documentation (under Community documentation). I'm not personally all that familiar with ePub myself, so having a guide at hand would be personally very helpful.

Cheers,
James
