Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

User Registration Error

Postby saurabh_kudesia » Tue Jun 06, 2006 3:58 am

Hi All,

We are getting this error when any user try to register:

Warning: mail(): SMTP server response: 501 Syntax error in parameters
or arguments in D:\inetpub\vhosts\knowgenesis.net\httpdocs\journal\classes\core\String
.inc.php on line 155

Warning: session_regenerate_id(): Cannot send session cookie -
headers already sent by (output started at
D:\inetpub\vhosts\knowgenesis.net\httpdocs\journal\classes\core\String
.inc.php:155) in
D:\inetpub\vhosts\knowgenesis.net\httpdocs\journal\classes\session\Ses
sionManager.inc.php on line 209

Even after this error, the registration is complete and user can access the site using the credentials provided. What could be possible cause and solution to handle these warning messages?

Regards
Saurabh

Hi Saurabh,

This message is coming up because your SMTP server is rejecting the welcome email that OJS sends out when a user is registered. Is OJS correctly sending other emails? Check your OJS SMTP configuration and mail server log, if you can, to see what's wrong.

Hello Alec,

You are right, I am getting the same error while sending the mails.

How should I correct this?

Saurabh

Hi Saurabh,

It looks from the error messages as though you're using PHP's mail(...) function on a Windows machine; from the discussion at http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=17322, for example, you might be experiencing a PHP bug. You can use OJS's custom SMTP mailer as a work-around by turning on the smtp option and configuring the SMTP options in the OJS configuration file (config.inc.php).
