This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.
What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:1.
Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.
2.
take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.
3.
Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the
OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the
OJS Development subforum.

My Press is new to OJS and is currently in the process of setting up our first journal. On a test submission recently, we assigned an editor without any problems. However, once that editor appeared on the submission's Summary page as an active editor, the checkboxes for "Review" and "Editing" were greyed out (i.e., we were unable to check or uncheck them). We use different editors for the review and editing processes, so we need these checkboxes to be available. Any idea why the checkboxes are greyed out or what we can do to make them available? We've scoured the forums and the User Guide but haven't found any hints.
Thanks!

Hi summerhayss,
Full Editors will always have full access to all submission content in the system, whereas Section Editors typically don't (although there is a caveat to that, below). Since a full Editor can access any part of the submission regardless of whether it is assigned to them, if the submission is assigned everything is greyed out. If you assign a Section Editor to a submission, then you can subsequently dictate which level of access they have.
The caveat is that if you have a Section Editor who is also enrolled as a full Editor, they will have full Editorial access even if they are assigned by clicking "Add Section Editor" (ie. by effectively attempting to assign them as an SE), and will subsequently have both boxes checked and greyed out.
Cheers,
James
