Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Hosting for OJS

I am thinking to start a new journal using OJS but I'm not sure what resources are required to run this system. What are the RAM and CPU requirements for this system? Would a shared hosting account supporting php and mysql be sufficient or would I need to have a virtual private server account? I assume this depends on the number of users accessing the service and the number of articles on the database but for a starting journal, which won't have an excessive amount of traffic, would a simple hosting account be sufficient?

Thanks! :)

Thanks but i'm not interested in such services. What i'm asking is whether a simple hosting account or a vps is required.

Hi ionas,

I know of a number of journals using a simple shared hosting account to run OJS. At a minimum though, you should check that the service meets OJS' system requirements (listed on the download page), and also allows SSH access (not strictly mandatory, but it really helps).
