"Free vs Fee" in OJS Journal List

Are you an Editor, Author, or Journal Manager in need of help? Want to talk to us about workflow issues? This is your forum.

Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

"Free vs Fee" in OJS Journal List

We've run into a "situation" that I haven't seen posted. Our library recently switched to the Serials Solutions knowledge base. Its list of databases of free journals includes the OJS Journal List. Journals from those databases become listed as resources accessible through our online catalog. Because the OJS Journals List includes some fee-based journals, our electronic resources department is requesting that Serials Solution remove the OJS list from its knowledge base. Apparently, our researchers searching our catalog have run into journals from the OJS list to which they thought they would have access, but don't because our library doesn't have a paid subscription to that title.

Is there any regularly updated list that separates the two categories of OJS journals? I realize we'll pick up some of the titles through DOAJ and similar databases. I just hate the thought that we're excluding all journals on the OJS list because of this subset.

Thanks,

Hi Winston,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. We don't currently separate between subscription/OA types anywhere in our journal list, and that might actually be difficult to do -- the information is user-submitted, and we'd have to contact or otherwise look up the journals listed there to establish whether they are subscription-protected or not. To confuse matters further, there are of course different access types including moving wall subscriptions, so answering definitively whether a journal has OA content is perhaps a little difficult.

The best bet right now is probably to continue to rely on DOAJ -- we heavily encourage OA journals using OJS to list themselves there. But I'll bring this up with the team and see if we can provide a better solution/list from our end as well. We've been discussing whether we should set up a more "curated" version of our demo harvester (see http://harvesters.sfu.ca/demo/), which would include only OJS/OCS/OMP content; that could be a rich source of information of the type you are looking for.

Cheers,
James
