Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

abstract as a required entry

Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to change the abstract to a required, asterisked entry in the author submission process as this is the preferred submission method for our journal here.

Thanks!

Hi Liz,

You'll need to change the code slightly for this. To make it a required field for the Author submission form, find these lines in classes/author/form/submit/AuthorSubmitStep2Form.inc.php near the top:
Code: Select all
// Validation checks for this form
$this->addCheck(new FormValidatorCustom($this, 'authors', 'required', 'author.submit.form.authorRequired', create_function('$authors', 'return count($authors) > 0;')));
$this->addCheck(new FormValidatorArray($this, 'authors', 'required', 'author.submit.form.authorRequiredFields', array('firstName', 'lastName', 'email')));
$this->addCheck(new FormValidator($this, 'title', 'required', 'author.submit.form.titleRequired'));

These lines check that at least one author exists and that first name, last name, and email are specified, and that the title was specified. Below the lines quoted above, add a new line:
Code: Select all
$this->addCheck(new FormValidator($this, 'abstract', 'required', 'author.submit.form.abstractRequird'));
You'll also need to add the localization key author.submit.form.abstractRequired to locale/en_US/locale.xml -- find one of the keys in the quoted code above to use as an example.
