Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Recently Upgraded to 2.3.3, Reader Tools Disappear

Postby Doki » Thu Oct 07, 2010 4:30 pm

Hopefully this is a silly question --

Recently we upgraded our journal to 2.3.3. Apparently, in this update, the reader tools in the right side of the article view have disappeared. As a first step, I checked our settings in the journal manager:

Code: Select all
Status

Reading tools: Enabled
Related items: Disabled

and

Code: Select all
Reading Tool Options

The reading tools appear in a frame beside published items in the sections of the journal that have been designated for indexing. The reading tools consist of a set of optional tools related to the published item, listed below, and a set of tools that provide access to related items, organized by field and discipline.
x  Enable Reading Tools for designated sections of journal.

Journal Item Tools
x   Abstract (presents the item's abstract).
x   About the author (displays the bio statements entered by the author).
x   How to cite item (provides bibliographic detail for item).
x   Indexing metadata (displays item's indexing metadata provided by author and system).
x   Supplementary files (displays list of files author included with submission).
x   Print version (provides a printer-friendly version of an item).
x   Look up terms (enables readers to double-click on any word in an item and send the word to a dictionary).
x   Notify a colleague (leads to an email template with link to item).
x   Email the author (leads to an email template with author's email).
   Find References
x   Add comment (enables readers to post comments, with Journal Manager able to delete).
x     Users must be registered and logged in to post, with anonymity not permitted.
x      Users must be registered and logged in to post, with anonymity permitted.
x      Users do not need to be registered to post, with anonymity permitted.

Related Item Tools
Field  - Disable Related Items
See Related Items Sets to view, add, correct, or delete related items for each field.

I also check individual entries and none of them seem to be excluded from indexing.

Next I checked teh config files for any new setting having to do with reader tools, but failed to see any.

Not sure where to look from here. Am I missing a setting to check?

Hi Doki,

The Reading Tools have been moved into the Block Plugins -- you should now find a Reading Tools option in Journal Management-> Setup -> Step 5.6. If it's in the middle column, just move it to the right. You may want to move it up to -- or at least near to -- the top of the list as well. This block only displays when viewing an abstract or full-text article. You'll also noticed that it's been prettified since 2.3.2. That said, we probably should've documented that it needs to be explicitly turned on in Setup in the upgrade documentation.

Cheers,
James

Hi RoTiV,

Did you enable the Reading Tools under Journal Management -> Reading Tools?

Cheers,
