Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

DB Error: ERROR: value too long for type character varying(255)
DB Error: ERROR: value too long for type character varying(255)

this only with internet explorer (7 or 8). with firefox or any other browser ojs works normally...

Hi maurox,

It looks like your install of IE uses an extremely long user agent string. Try applying one of the patches at http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5183 to your installation to limit the length.

We were getting some errors with IE 7 so I tried to apply this patch, but it ended up corrupting the entire site. I was getting database syntax errors on line 4 no matter what page we tried and no matter what browser:

DB Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '''' at line 4

So I undid this patch. We still have problems with IE7 users not being able to login.

Hi timmcgeary,

Are you sure you applied the patch correctly? Did you apply it using the patch tool, or manually?

I did it manually as I did not see instructions on any tool. When I clicked on more detailed, it merely showed me the text file of the lines being added. I reverted back to the previous version when we saw the error.
