Automated reminders to reviewers

Postby osborne » Wed Jul 27, 2005 3:02 pm

One of the journal administrator's options is to have an automated reminder sent to a referee who has not responded to a request to referee a paper. The adminstrator can choose the number of days before such a reminder is sent, ranging from 3 to 10. But in the message sent to a referee, the person is asked to respond within a week---I see that this is hard-coded into a class file. These two things are not literally inconsistent---a referee could be reminded after 3 days even if they have been asked to respond only within a week---but they don't sit very well together. Am I misunderstanding something? (For my own purposes I can easily solve the problem: I'd like referees to respond within 3 days, and I can change the hard-coding in SectionEditorAction to accomplish this. I'm mentioning it only because it seems to me to be a small glitch in the design.)

Probably a bug if it is as you describe. I'm not sure which email template you're referring to, though -- REVIEW_REMIND_AUTO does not use "one week later", although the request emails do (presumably under the assumption that the due date will be at least one week from the date the request is sent, which is not unreasonable).

I'm talking about REVIEW_REQUEST, which asks for a response to the request by $weekLaterDate. (That's not the due date for the report---only for a response to the request.) That date is hard-coded. However, one of the administrator's options is to have a reminder sent automatically as early as 3 days after the request. It's those two things that seem inconsistent.

Oh, in that case I wouldn't really consider this a bug. I don't see it as inconsistent to receive a "friendly reminder" before the one week (which is really just a soft limit) is up.

I suppose there might be some marginal usefulness in being able to change the one week default, but then again, from my standpoint it represents a reasonable default and can always be overridden before the email is sent.
