Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

Submission file naming convention

Is there a cannonical description of the file naming conventions for uploaded files?
(ie what they are renamed to on upload)

As an aside, we are considering switching-off submission file renaming (I believe in ArticleFileManager.inc.php) - especially to help identify the content of supplementary files (figure1.tiff, figure3.tiff, figure2.tiff, makes it clear what the author intended) - feedback/comments from anyone who has done this for their journals gratefully received :D

Hi tommowlam,

Agreed, the filenames are a little inscrutible. The way they're currently constructed is implemented in classes/file/ArticleFileManager.inc.php in the generateFilename function:
  • Article ID
  • File ID
  • Revision
  • File stage abbreviation

Thanks Alec!

For others interested, I have pasted the long versions of the 'file stage abbreviation's defined here:
https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/doxygen/stable/h ... tml#l00330

PUBLIC: PB
SUPP: SP
NOTE: NT
REVIEW: RV
EDITOR: ED
COPYEDIT: CE
LAYOUT: LE
ATTACHMENT: AT
SUBMISSION: SM

And I guess it is worth mentioning that the File ID is not reset for each submission but is consecutive across the database.

Thanks again Alec :D
